Tower Progress - Updated June 6, 2019
The Broadband Initiative, as approved by the Board of Supervisors, envisioned constructing seven towers and co-locating equipment on the two Public Safety Towers the County is building in the western part of the County. It was noted that some of these planned towers may not be constructed and others might, based on construction and actions of independent tower companies.
As of June 5, 2019, three towers have been completed; Louisa County High School behind the Middle School ballfields, Jouett Elementary School, near the back of the property and Moss-Nuckols Elementary School, again near the back of the property.
- Towers, electricity and fencing are complete at all three sites
- Propane tanks (for the backup generators) installations have been set and tested.
- The back-haul radio links are completed from the Chopping Road tower (owned by SCS Broadband) to the High School and Moss-Nuckols as well as the link from the High School to Jouett. Other links for the system have been engineered, ordered and have FCC approval.
SCS Broadband was awarded a site-wide leasing agreement to locate their internet service equipment on all of the Broadband towers mentioned above and below. SCS purchased CVALink a few years back and currently serves many homes from existing towers and poles throughout Louisa County. Adding these Broadband Authority towers will increase their service areas dramatically. SCS plans to begin service the week of March 25th, 2019 from the Moss-Nuckols tower with current technology wireless equipment. The schedule that SCS provided to the Broadband Authority at their meeting on June 5, 2019 is to install end-user equipment on the Jouett tower between June 10th and June 20th. Depending on final construction items, they plan to install their equipment on the Trevilian's tower between June 20th and June 30th. The company has applied for and received permission to convert all of their tower equipment to add LTE service providing better and faster internet. As of 6/5/19 the tower approved for Trevilians Elementary School behind the tennis courts is near completion. Two County Public Safety towers are near completion in the Zion Crossroads and Gordonsville areas. One additional tower is in the planning stages in the Holly Grove area and has received the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) from the County. Co-locations are also planned for our radio links and WISPs to locate on private towers in the Bumpass and Yanceyville areas.
The 199' tower at Jouett Elementary is seen on the right with support guy wires.
On the left, as seen from the tennis courts, the tower is barely visible.
The radios, antennas and WISP access point to multi-point radios have not been installed in these photos.
