Sheriff Ashland D. Fortune


Ashland Fortune is a Native of Louisa County, attending Louisa County public Schools. He then furthered his education at Virginia State University, majoring in Agriculture and Business. He is married to the former Mary Baskfield, and has two children, Dianna Fortune Thompson and Kimberly Faye Fortune. They have one grandson Keith Thompson, Jr, "KJ". Ashland Fortune is also a successful small business owner, having built and operated the first self storage in Louisa.

Ashland Fortune has been in Law Enforcement for over forty years. He was the Chief of Police for the Town of Louisa for over thirty years. In January, 2000 he was elected as Sheriff of Louisa County, becoming the first African American Sheriff in the history of Louisa County. Sheriff Fortune was reelected in 2004, 2008 and again in 2012. His credentials and memberships are a credit to his character and include:
  • Superintendent of the Galilee Baptist Church Sunday School
  • Deacon at Galilee Baptist Church
  • Former First Aid Instructor
  • Responsible for forming the first Auxiliary Police Force in the county
  • Initiated a Drug awareness program in the County School system
  • Member of the National Sheriff's Association
  • Member of the Virginia Sheriff's Association
  • Member of the Fraternal Order of Police
  • Member of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police
  • Board Member of the Central Virginia Regional Jail
  • Board Member of the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Academy
  • Board Member of Crime Solvers
  • Member of the National Heart Association
  • Member of Crime Clinic
  • Member of the Transportation Safety Committee.
